Brielle

I know it was hard for Vrale to agree to let me go. He obviously respects me and thinks I’m capable, but he still has that protective streak they all seem to have. I know he wanted to be the one to take care of me, to solve the problem for us both.

But if we’re ever truly going to be mates, we need to be able to work as a team. There needs to be give and take, and most importantly, trust.

We make the opening as wide as possible, getting all the rocks on our side out of the way. The passageway is extremely narrow, just a little gap between two rough stone walls. It’s hard to tell exactly how far it stretches, but I can see more rocks piled up around the opening on the other side.

Vrale touches my hand once more before I start to make my way through the small hole in the cave wall, and I can see the worry in his face. Neither of us are entirely sure what’s on the other side, and to be honest, I’m not thrilled about squeezing through the tiny space either. But I refuse to let my fear get the better of me. If we’re going to get out of here, we’re going to do it together.

The rock walls on either side of me are jagged and rough, eroded away and broken. I keep my arms close to my sides, but it’s impossible not to get a little scraped up as I worm my way through the tight passageway. The rough surface feels like it’s scraping off a layer of skin when my hand drags against it, and I can feel my clothing catching on points of broken-off stone, tearing a little. I stumble over something in my path, and my arm scrapes along the wall, making me hiss in pain.

If we can get out of here alive, it’ll be worth a few bumps and bruises, I tell myself.

I’m pretty sure I can feel a small trickle of blood running down my arm, but I’ve had worse. Hell, I broke my wrist playing softball in middle school. I once gashed open my chin trying to impress a boy who owned a skateboard.

This is nothing.

The space gets tighter, though, as I try to push through to the opposite side, and my heart pounds harder and faster. Panic starts to claw its way up my throat, reminding me that I’ve always been a little claustrophobic—and down here, that little is turning into a lot.

Breathe. Just breathe. Just keep moving.

I try to think about anything else, allowing my mind to dwell on any subject that isn’t the unforgiving rock pressing in on me from either side. I think of the food I’ll eat when I get out of here, a nice tall glass of water… and what Vrale and I did on the floor of the cave last night.

I feel my cheeks flame at the memory, but I don’t push it away.
